North Northamptonshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy Consultation

North Northamptonshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy Consultation

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) became mandatory on the 12th February 2024 for all new planning applications, subject to certain site exemptions, and aims to ensure that all new developments have a positive impact on the environment by delivering a 10% net gain.

Where developers are unable to meet their BNG requirements on-site, they are required to secure land through the creation of off-site habitats, by purchasing biodiversity units on the market, or as a last resort, statutory credits from the government. This creates new opportunities for landowners.

North Northamptonshire Council have opened a consultation for their Local Nature Recovery Strategy, which runs until the 9th December. This has the potential to influence the location of off-site biodiversity sites across the Local Planning Authority (LPA), in order to identify locations that will create, improve and enhance those habitats which are most likely to provide the greatest benefits to the environment, and therefore may attract a greater return on the sale of BNG units to developers. The LPA have an existing map showcasing the current areas of particular importance for biodiversity and areas which could become important in the future, in order to meet their Nature Recovery Priorities.
